Are you stressed? Most of us will automatically answer YES ! to this question. It has even become fashionable, a status symbol. Everybody who is anybody is stressed, otherwise they are obviously going nowhere and they are achieving absolutely nothing.

How we perceive a stress-provoking event and how we react to it determines its impact on our health. We may be motivated and invigorated by the events in our lives, or we may see some as "stressful" and respond in a manner that may have a negative effect on our physical, mental and social well-being.

How stressed are you? Dangerously stressed? Or just “best-performance-yet” stressed? How can you find out? 

Take this simple stress quiz to determine your stress quotient. For each question, score 1 if your answer is "occasionally", 2 for "quite often", 3 for "very often."

  • Do you get anxious, or feel sweaty or shivery?
  • Do you get palpitations?
  • Do you go to the toilet more than usual?
  • Do you have butterflies in your stomach, or does your mouth get dry?
  • Do you feel tired and exhausted most of the time?
  • Are you drinking more than usually? Or more than you should?
  • Do you suffer from vague aches and pains or persistent headaches?
  • Are you a workaholic, and/or a perfectionist?
  • Do you feel you have no time for yourself?
  • Are you constantly irritable?
  • Do you think 'I can't cope with all this any more', or feel trapped?
  • Have you lost interest in food, fun or sex?
  • Do you eat too much or too little, or live off snacks and gobbled food?
  • Have you lost your sense of humour?
  • Have you lost interest in your personal appearance?
  • Have you lost interest in other people?
  • Do you feel that everything is pointless, or life is not enjoyable?
  • Do you find yourself losing your temper or bursting into tears?
  • Are you forgetful? Do you lose things ?
  • Is it hard difficult to fall asleep, or do you wake up in the night, or early in the morning, unrefreshed?

Your score roughly indicates your stress level:

  • 1 - 15: You are coping well with life's ups and downs.
  • 16 - 35: You are stressed, but you are coping. Simple changes could make you feel much better.
  • 36 - 50: Stress may be gradually undermining your health. It's time to do something about it.
  • 51 - 60: You are seriously stressed and should seek help now.

Left unchecked, however, stress can cause physical, emotional, and behavioural disorders which can affect your health, vitality, and peace-of-mind, as well as personal and professional relationships.
